Custom Wood Millwork in New York, NY
Estate Millwork is the manufacturer, not a local showroom. We build custom hardwood doors, shutters, and cabinet doors to order in our Pennsylvania workshop and ship them directly to homes and job sites across the five boroughs and the greater New York metro. Because everything is made to your dimensions, we work naturally with the openings you actually have — the out-of-square jambs of a pre-war co-op, the tall proportions of a brownstone parlor floor, or the exact profile a landmark district requires.
Millwork for pre-war and landmark New York homes
Much of New York's residential building stock predates modern standardization: brownstones and townhouses from the 1800s, pre-war co-ops and apartment buildings, and rowhouses whose door and window openings have settled and shifted over a century. Stock sizes rarely fit. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile, or hold a tight sightline in an opening that is no longer square. If your building falls within a Landmarks Preservation Commission historic district, send us the profile or the survey requirement and we will build shutters and doors that read correctly for the period rather than forcing a stock catalog part onto a historic elevation.
Choosing wood for the city's exposure
New York runs humid summers, freeze-thaw winters, and road salt and grime that are hard on exterior work, while interior pieces sit in heated, dried-out winter air. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their stability and weather resistance; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most New York interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the piece holds its shape through the seasonal swing between a humid August and a radiator-dry January.
Getting large millwork into a New York building
Delivery in the city is its own problem, and it is worth planning before you order. A walk-up with a narrow stair, a co-op that requires a certificate of insurance and a reserved freight elevator, or a doorman building with restricted delivery hours all change how a piece needs to be sized, crated, and scheduled. Tell us the access situation up front — we can advise on panel sizes that will make the turn, crate for the carrier your building allows, and coordinate the ship date so your finished millwork arrives when you can actually receive it.
