Bring the Farmhouse Look into your Kitchen: An In-Depth Look
Published: February 09, 2021

The simplistic, down home feel and charming aesthetics of the farmhouse style kitchen make it one of the most well loved current kitchen designs among homeowners and designers. Farmhouse kitchens are one of the simplest most practical kitchen designs that bring a warm, welcoming and sense of country comfort.
The farmhouse style was originally for a more of a functional home to cater to the farmer and their family. Keeping with its original intentions and combining different styles throughout the years the farmhouse style reflects its American heritage through simple design features, charming historical elements and inspiration from nature.
When you think of a farmhouse kitchen you think of an unpretentious, functional and straightforward kitchen that is traditionally built with whatever materials were available to build their homes, giving it a more rugged and rustic appearance.
Characteristics of the Farmhouse Kitchen
- Down home feel — in general farmhouse kitchens are natural, cozy and comforting; making the cabinets laid back and less formal as compared to a country kitchen.
- Unpretentious design — farmhouse kitchen cabinets are of a simple and straightforward design, they have simple lines that are accentuated with plain trim and paneling.
- Natural materials — much like the country kitchen style farmhouse kitchens take inspiration from nature to bring the outdoors in.
- Rustic appeal — the farmhouse kitchen has a strong rustic appeal coming from the elements and materials used in constructing.
- White and light colors — farmhouse kitchens generally consist of a bright and airy color palette mostly of white and light hues as the primary colors.
Farmhouse Kitchen Cabinet Doors
The farmhouse kitchen is known for its comfy and casual laid back vibe, the straightforward design of farmhouse style cabinets are often accentuated with simple details like beadboard panels.
Shaker Style Cabinet Doors
One of the most iconic trademarks of the farmhouse kitchens are shaker style kitchen cabinet doors. These doors by definition are a five piece door two rails, two stiles and a recessed center panel. While shaker panel doors have become increasingly used in contemporary and modern kitchen settings, these can be used and are a favorite for farmhouse kitchens because of their charm and aesthetics.
Beadboard Style Cabinet Doors
Beadboard cabinet doors are a signature look of not only farmhouse kitchens but also country and cottage style kitchens. Traditionally used as a decorative wall treatment in living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens before the advent of plastering and drywall beadboard panels is a narrow row of vertical wood planks with a little ridge in between the joints called a bead. Homeowners typically paint their beadboard cabinet doors in white or other light colored paints. This contributes to the rustic feel and charm to the kitchen making it feel more cozy and homespun.

Build an Instant QuoteWhy Custom Millwork Makes a Difference
Mass-produced doors, shutters, and cabinets are built to standard dimensions using the fastest possible construction methods. Custom millwork takes the opposite approach: every piece is built to your exact measurements using time-tested joinery techniques that have proven themselves over centuries. The result is a product that fits perfectly, operates smoothly, and lasts for generations rather than years.
Estate Millwork builds every product in our Pennsylvania workshop using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. This technique interlocks the rails and stiles with precisely cut joints reinforced by hardwood dowel pins, creating a mechanical bond that does not rely solely on adhesive. Unlike pocket-screwed or biscuit-joined alternatives, mortise-and-tenon joints actually strengthen over time as the wood fibers compress and lock together.
Our manufacturing process begins with hand-selected, kiln-dried lumber graded for architectural appearance. Each board is inspected for grain pattern, color consistency, and structural integrity before entering production. CNC machinery cuts joints to thousandth-of-an-inch tolerances, and skilled woodworkers assemble, sand, and inspect every piece before it ships. This combination of modern precision and traditional craftsmanship is what separates custom millwork from stock alternatives.
